Proverbs 4 – Wisdom

4:7 – Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom and in all your getting, get understanding.

4:8 – Exalt her, and she will promote you; she will bring you honor, when you embrace her.

4:9 – She will place on your head an ornament of grace; a crown of glory she will deliver to you.

What is “wisdom”?

I’ve read the difference between knowledge and wisdom is:

“Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it into a fruit salad.”

So, it seems that wisdom is knowledge applied correctly.

Sounds so simple, doesn’t it?  But, as we all know, the simple things are usually hard.

The hardest part, for me at least, is getting myself out of the way.

Too often, my own ego causes me to:

  • reject what is correct, or
  • filter out unpleasant observations or unpleasant facts, OR
  • (and here’s the dastardly part) believe untrue observations about myself, or others.

Imagine this scenario…

How often have we criticized ourselves unnecessarily?  How many times have we missed an opportunity in our lives because we “talked ourselves out of it”?

What if we put wisdom above ourselves and acted appropriately – despite our ego?  What would be different in our lives if we actually took the risks, and exercised the initiative we knew we should?

I guess it takes more courage to be wise than I thought.
