Proverbs 6 – Wicked (NOT the play)

6:12 – A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth;

6:13 – He winks with his eyes, he shuffles his feet, he points with his fingers;

6:14 – Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually, he sows discord.

6:15 – Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

In L. Frank Baum’s “The Wizard of Oz,” the wicked witch of the west seems to have everything going her way – until Dorothy undoes her with a bucket of water.

At the end of the movie “Meet Joe Black,” Bill Parrish’s nemesis, Drew, swaggers into the library.  During that final meeting, Drew is demolished as his secret machinations are revealed.  “His [Drew’s] calamity comes suddenly” and he is “broken without remedy.”

Of course, that’s just the movies.

Or, is it?

I look at our political parties, one party has made it bones by speaking what is not true, sowing discord, pitting race against race, rich against poor, government against the people.

Now, we have ISIS/ISIL on the rise, Russia taking territory from Ukraine, murders in France, record persistent unemployment and greater discord in our own country.

It seems our calamity is coming suddenly.

I just hope we aren’t broken without remedy.
