Proverbs 20 – Drawing from the Well

20:5 – Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.

We’ve heard all the arguments against “it.”  We know all the reasons “it” can’t or shouldn’t be done or sought, but we do “it” anyway.

“It” doesn’t work, and we persist.

We meet with failure after failure, and we keep going after “it.”

Our family, friends, and co-workers look at us like we’ve taken leave of our senses, and still, we pursue “it.”

We all have an “it” in our lives.  “It” is something we long for deep in our hearts; we need “it,” we crave “it.”  No amount of logic, pleading, or judgement will deter us from working toward “it.”

The only tool that lowers the walls we’ve built to protect ourselves, and our “it,” is someone else understanding – not judging or evaluating; not approving or disapproving – just understanding.

Look around.  Everyone else has an “it,” too!

Our wives, our husbands, our kids, our co-workers, our bosses – they all have an “it.”

No matter how close we are, we won’t truly understand another person’s motivations until we become the “man (or woman) of understanding” who earns the privilege of drawing “it” out.
