Proverbs 2 – Running with the Pack

Proverbs 2:3-5 – 3 (For if thou callest after knowledge, and cryest for understanding: 4 If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for treasures, 5 Then shalt thou understand the feare of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.  – the Geneva Bible, 1560 Edition

The “world” conspires to have us move faster, respond quicker, react more, and contemplate less.  Yet, we are happiest when we know where we’re going and are moving (even if slowly) in that direction.  To learn where we “should” go, to learn in what areas He would have us grow, we have to carve our, and protect, time in our lives to seek, and to listen!

There is an explosion of distraction in the world today.  It’s on our phones, computer screens, TV sets, in our mail, at work, driving down the road.  This distraction is heavily researched, backed by science, and it is ALL designed to pull you – us – in a specific direction.  Infrequently, that direction is aligned with the direction we “should” be going; sometimes, it’s only generally aligned, but MOST OF THE TIME, we are pulled, or enticed, to move away from where we should be heading.

We get so addicted to the “progress,” the movement, the momentum that we don’t consider where we will end up.  Not until we arrive and realize how much we lost or missed along the way.  The real tragedy is when we realize we’re not even where we want to be.

We can’t outrun the world.  As long as we keep trying to run faster we will stay in the “pack.”  We may move closer to the front of it, but we’ll always be in the “pack” of runners scurrying toward the same destination.  We can’t slow down, because we might lose our place in the “pack.” We might allow it to move past us.  (And, to help us speed up again, there will be well-meaning friends who will encourage us to pick up the pace, keep going, it’s just a little bit further.)

But, it’s in those “slower” moments God highlights different avenues, secondary streets, maybe even some dark alleys, and He whispers, “That is your path to the special destination I have prepared for you.”

“Trust Me.  It’s better than you can possibly imagine.”

Will you slow down and hear what He has to say?
